These paintings started by asking a different question. What do we actually see?
In these works the whole view sits behind a soft haze, because life is never completely clear. The middle ground is where things settle and become readable: the gum trees, the fence lines, the sheds on the flat. That's the present, the part we can make sense of. The foreground is looser and more abstract, full of movement and colour that won't quite resolve. That's what's still coming towards us. Life works like this too. We can usually see what's right in front of us, and we can make sense of where we are, but what's ahead is always a little blurred.
These paintings are about trusting the path anyway: noticing the open gates, the turns we didn't plan, and letting the rest come into focus in its own time.
